Darkroom vs Photoshop

You can do this in Photoshop, but doing it in a wet darkroom is much better. It’s produced by turning on the lights while the print is still developing. The results are different each time you do it. Some skaters over the years have actually brought something new to skating.
Natas Kaupas is one who made a profound impact on it, he and Gonz took street skating 3 dimensional with handrails and wallrides, etc.
Actually, this photo has 3 people in it that somehow left their mark on our sport and still play a big part.

When Airwalk was a skate brand

Matt Mumford 50-50 at La Jolla High back in mid 90s when Airwalk Shoes was a core brand and before dads could buy them at the mall.
What a shame. This was an Airwalk ad.

It’s funny, I guess I’m just old. I have mentioned a couple of names to younger skaters(under 35) on occasion and they have given me that dog style head cocked to the side and I knew right away, they had no clue who I was talking about. One of the best skaters back in the 70s was a compact guy named Tom “Wally” Inouye(IPS- Inouye’s Pool Service). Wally rode for Sims and then Caster Skateboards and he had a super fluid and rubbery style. This is a photo of Wally I shot laying out a bert on the entrance to the keyhole at Del Mar Skate Ranch in 1981. Nobody rode that spot in the pool.

Local Boy, Tony Hawk Coverage

Encinitas and Carlsbad Magazines recently interviewed Tony Hawk, presently a resident of Encinitas and formerly a resident of Carlsbad. Tony graces the cover of the December issue of Encinitas Magazine with a nice multi-spread inside and another multi-spread in Carlsbad Magazine.
