Time to Grind

Off for a month straight of shooting. Should be a good one. Barely time to breathe, hopefully good moments/conditions/ and times will be along the way . Grind time. First off to Maui to shoot a portrait for Rolling Stone Mag of Clay Marzo. (Fuckin Hyped!) Quick 24 hr mission to loction scout. Meet and feel out Clay, shoot him, and squeeze in a surf session. Then back to the airport. Then off to Whistler to shoot with Annie Boulanger, for Nike for four days. Praying for snow to stay good, and the sun to POP!

Next off to East Coast (saying what up to the homies!) and to shoot at the US OPEN for Kodak for the 3 days. ALso in Stratton, Blotto and I are doing a SNOWMAD photo show. If your around swing thru! PBR will be flowing the brews!

Following that is the mission to Europe to meet up with GIGI for Nike. THis will be only an 8 day trip to get quite a bit of material. 2010 Nike snowboarding ad campaign has quite a different feel than last years. It will be an entirely different mind frame of shooting which is always good to keep pushing yourself.

Finally, I’m off for 10 days to interior British COlumbia backcountry for NIke and Oakley. However, this will be a pretty special trip to document Nicolas Muller and Jake Blauvelt. “Nonchalant” is what comes ot mind when describing Nico and Jake’s riding. Each of them have very unique style of using the mountain as their canvas, and together it could be all time.

I had this slide show created to present to NIKE SNOW this fall (edit by regbob (no longer IBob due to a recent chain of events)). This was a simple, 3 minute piece of what was shot in the 2008-2009 season including the ad campaign “birds eye of snow.” This will be beneficial for them to use at NIKE, as a visual representation of the NIKE SNOWBOARDING team. We only included a certain amount of content for each rider to keep the video at a respectable time.

I’ve been on the road (test shoot in LA, The Northface shoot, and Oakley shoot) for the past few weeks shooting, now home for a few days to edit and re charge. Lots to process and catch up before heading out to canada and AK at the end of the month.

I decided I want to continue my SILHO project into other sports. So I had a week long test shoot in LA. We shot Basketball, Soccer, Fencing and Tennis. All in outdoor environments. A mixture of film and digi. This is one back from the lab, not a final at all, I just wanted to get an out take from the shoot. Stay tuned for a video behind the shoots as well as the final images processed. Thanks to REG-BOB,Hollywood-kid, ZACHER (guest appearance art director for one night) and Sandrine at REEL SESSIONS (BIG UP!).

Then was a 4 day shoot for The North Face in the Northwest. I love going to washington as it is gritty, raw, lots of weather and sometimes insane pow. The shoot was majority lifestyle for the campaign, which should be pretty rad once finished. I shot about 15 rolls of film on the shoot, all 120 (Tri-x 400 or Ilford 3200). The rest was digi. It will be interesting to see what TNF selects. Good working with Absinthe crew as always. Heres an outake of DCP.

After that was an Oakley shoot in Utah for Factory Labs of skier Grete Eliassen. Fun shoot for sure, Greta is the shit. Thanks FACTORY and Reel Sessions for production. A few outakes:

Back from the Lab: Costa Rica: Personal

I went down to Costa Rica/ Panama a few weeks ago. Only brought the hassy down and some 120 for some personal work. No pressure, no schedule, no bull shit, just shooting when ya feel like it or inspired. Got these back from the lab recently. I feel these would look differently shot with digi? What do you think ?

Nick Hamilton, from Transworld Snow came to me in December and told me his plan of doing three separate night shoots at each of the dew tour stops. He asked me to come up with something creative to shoot in the halfpipe at Snowbasin, utah last month.

Well, I love to blow shit up, and grew up lighting things on fire. I wanted to do something different so I created a concept of a halfpipe shoot with fire works. With help from ALLI and snowbasin, it was a go! Check the link below for a behind the scenes video. (Skip over or mute the part when Muzzey is talking about me) Stoked the entire shoot all came together and it went out with a bang!

The final images will run in TW SNOW next season.

NYC ROUND 2

Just got back from a week in NYC. Lots of flavor in that place, every time I go I am reminded. You see the most interesting and wide variety of people there, I think in the world. Pretty inspiring to see that.

I spent the majority of the week, showing my book around. I was able to meet with a few ad agencies (Weiden+Kenedy, JWT, and Saatchi and Saatchi), a few magazines (New York Times magazine, ESPN, PDN), and a two photographers (Peter Yang and Platon). It was really great to hear feedback, guidance, and insight on my book from people like Plat and Peter. Both have such different styles and approaches, but both who I have so much respect for. It gave me a whole new moitvation and direction to go out and make new work with for the next 6 months.

It made me realize, how important establishing relationships is. As well as when you want to show work, show prints in person, not Jpegs on a computer or a website. The work is so much more real.

This trip was pretty last minute, however I was able to get a few “leave behinds” printed up before I left. This was very benificial as you are essentialy giving a small piece of you work as a visual reference to the person you are meeting with. I kept the design pretty simple, I chose 5 different images which were printed individually with my contact info on each. I used a local printing agency, 110 pound paper was used for print. A few were square, 1 horizontal and the rest horizontal. This is something I will bring for every meeting from now on, NYC or not. Its nice to leave something, always.
